Ukraine's grain harvest fell by 9.9 percent to 34.251 million tonnes in 2006 due to a decline in area and yield, the State Statistics Committee said on Tuesday. It said wheat harvest fell 25.4 percent to 13.947 million tonnes and the maize crop 10.4 percent to 6.419 million.
The barley crop, however, rose by 26.4 percent to 11.340 million tonnes from 8.975 million in 2005. The committee said the area under grain was reduced by 2.8 percent in 2006 to 14.190 million hectares from 14.605 million in 2005.
It said unfavourable weather had reduced the average grain yield by 7.3 percent to 2.41 tonnes per hectare in 2006 from 2.60 in 2005.
Analysts have said the 2006 grain harvest totalled 35.095 million tonnes. The leading UkrAgroConsult agriculture consultancy said this week Ukraine had harvested 13.809 million tonnes of wheat, 11.998 million of barley and 6.156 million of maize in 2006. Agriculture officials last month estimated the harvest at about 35.1 million tonnes.
