The Monopoly Control Authority (MCA) has sought report from the sugar mills about suspension of crushing operation as per the decisions of PSMA, and also the date(s) crushing was restarted, along with other related details to what extent the problems were resolved.
A handout issued here by the MCA on Monday said that the Authority had taken this decision on press reports, which appeared in Business Recorder.
The news item had pointed to a PSMA decision for halting crushing operation by a group of sugar mills in Sindh. The handout said the MCA took action against some of the mills as PSMA attempted to press the government to reduce sugarcane prices and threatened that its member units would stop crushing if the government did not agree to reduce sugarcane prices.
The sugar mills were also directed to inform the MCA about their objections, or otherwise, to the above stated PSMA decisions.
The sugar mills have been asked to provide, by January 25, 2007, the requisite information along with daily production of sugar from November 2006 to January 15, mentioning the date of starting crushing.
MCA warned the mills that in case of non-compliance the mills whom notice were served would be liable for proceedings under Section 19 of MRTPO 1970.
