Sindh government, acknowledging the fact that Hepatitis is a growing as well as serious health problem in the country, has incorporated treatment and prevention of liver disease among its top priority health care schemes.
This was stated here on Friday by Sindh Governor Dr Ishrat-ul-Ibad Khan at the foundation-stone laying ceremony of Sarwar Jahan Zuberi Liver Institute, first of its kind in the country, being established by Dow University of Health Science (DHUS).
Appreciating the initiative taken by DUHS, the Governor said that although liver diseases are being dealt with by medical departments of various government hospitals, yet need for a separate institute for liver diseases, "like we have for heart diseases and kidney diseases" was being taken care of by DUHS.
"A separate institute of the magnitude of Sawar Zuberi Liver Instiute is very much required," Ibad said responding to the report presented by the Institute's Director, Dr Rana Hameed, indicating the fast increasing pressures of Hepatitis B and C patients at the small 'liver centre' operational at Civil Hospital Karachi for the last one year.
Dr Ibad said that intensity of scenario in the context of incidence of Hepatitis had also been realised at national level, and Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz has already constituted a task force to handle the issues related to hepatitis.
He expressed satisfaction that with the establishment of Sarwar Zuberi Live Institute not only the patients from all over the country would be served but training to the post-graduate medical students and other related staff would also be streamlined, addressing the dearth of expertise.
"I can also foresee that the Institute will be a valuable asset in the field of medical research," he commented mentioning that he had been frequently emphasising establishment of centres providing health care facilities of international standards to the general public.
