Motorcycle dealers have criticised the 2005-06 federal budget and said that the government has reduced import duty on cars but no duty reduction was announced for complete built-up (CBU) units of motorcycles. They said that cars are purchased and used by people of middle and high income groups, according to their purchasing power, but motorcycles are purchased and used by poor and middle income segments of the society.
Motorcycle dealers demanded that duty on CBU units of motorcycles should be reduced from 90 percent to 50 percent to reduce their prices in the country.
A big importer of CBU units of motorcycles, Adnan Mazhar, said that the government should review its decision of not reducing duty on CBU unties of motorcycles.
He noted that present duty on import of CBU units of motorcycles is at 90 percent and should be brought down considerably to provide this transport on reduced rate.
Chairman, Karachi Motorcycle Dealers Welfare Association, Abdul Raoof Bhatti, said that providing motorcycles at reduced rates would help students and office going middle and low income groups to have their own transport and increase their mobility..
He said motorcycle is a multipurpose transport and is used for distribution of newspapers, home devilry of milk etc.
