World Bank, consultant on Agribusiness David B. Parsons on Friday visited Multan and met the members of the Mango Growers Association Pakistan (MGA) to discuss modalities to facilitate mango growers' role in the value chain in mango production and marketing through World Bank funding. Syed Zahid Hussain Gardezi President of MGA, Major S. Zahid Ali Bukhari (Retd) and Muzaffar Khan Khakwani were present in the meeting. The growers briefed David on the constraints discouraging value added export from the cluster areas of mango and demanded facilitation by way of infrastructural layout for better production, marketing and export.
The president MGA highlighted the dire need of a fully equipped and functional Mango Export Processing Zone in Multan and an upgraded cargo complex at Multan Airport.
He also advised the WB consultant to devise a rationale for donor funding so that the stakeholders become the major beneficiaries and the funds are not wasted on irrelevant projects. David later visited the fruits and vegetable market along with President MGA and met fruit dealers. Later he visited the orchard of the member of MGA Nawab Sallahuddin Naqshbund on Bosan Road, Multan with Gardezi.
