Foreign Office spokesman said here on Monday that Pakistan has protested very strongly to the torching of Pakistan's consulate-general at Jalalabad, and urged the Afghan for a thorough investigation. At his weekly briefing, Jalil Abbas Jilani said that President Karzai's government has ordered an investigation into the incident, and added that he would not make any comment in this connection till such time as the Afghan probe is completed. He, however, wondered about reasons of the Afghan attack on Pakistan's mission, particularly when the sentiments on the cause of agitation in Afghanistan were the same as those demonstrated by Pakistanis.
The Afghans and Pakistani, he said, have common ground for protest against the desecration of the Holy Quran in the Guantanamo Bay.
(Meanwhile, Newsweek magazine on Monday apologised, acknowledging "errors in its earlier story", and its editor said that it would "re-examine the accusations". It nevertheless maintained that its information had come from a "knowledgeable US government source"). Other questions at the briefing related to transport service across the Line of Control in Kashmir, opening of bus or train services at other points along the international border and the status of the composite dialogue.
