NWFP Chief Minister Akram Khan Durrani has informed the provincial Cabinet that Punjab Chief Minister Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi has promised that wheat flour supply to NWFP would continue, saying that the Frontier province will get three million tonnes of wheat from Punjab within two months.
The meeting of the NWFP Cabinet was held on Tuesday and continued till evening, while Chief Minister Akram Khan was in the chair.
The Cabinet discussed wood situation in Kohistan district, it decided that the wood should be brought at road side by March 31, while for the remaining wood lying in far-flung areas, a committee should be constituted which will decide about its disposal.
Discussing the imposition of tax on Afghan timber by the Dir district government, the Cabinet informed that no district government could levy tax in any form without the approval of the provincial government, therefore, the district government was asked to refrain from levying tax on imported timber.
The Cabinet approved, in principle, the establishment of a women university, and asked for releasing necessary funds for the purpose so as to start the university from July next.
It condemned the killings of 11 innocent persons at the hands of some miscreants in Karachi during the recent by-elections, and demanded immediate arrest of the killers. The cabinet also prayed for the eternal peace of the deceased.
The Cabinet appreciated the performance of the police department particularly with reference to maintenance of law and order during Pak-India cricket match here and the months of Muharram and Rabi-ul-Awal.
It approved 2,500 posts for the police department to further improve its working.
Discussing the Hasba Bill, the Cabinet decided to send the bill on Wednesday to the NWFP governor for the third time for his approval.
It, however, also decided to hold a seminar at Nishtar Hall here to debate the bill and remove apprehensions of some quarters about it. People of all shades of opinion will be invited to the seminar while representatives of various foreign media will also be invited to give coverage to the event.
The Cabinet also approved allocation of 100 kanals of land for the CID Headquarter and Training Centre at Regi Lalma.
The NWFP chief minister directed the IGP to increase the number of police personnel in tourist spots of the province to ensure security of tourists. It also decided that under the Tameer-e-Sarhad programme Rs 5 million each would be allocated to MPAs who will utilise it through DCOs the schemes costing over Rs 0.5 million would be executed through projects committees. The projects of the programme will be approved by District Development Committees (DDC). This decision was taken in view of expeditious completion of development projects.
During the meeting, the NWFP chief secretary proposed that 20,000 graduates should be employed on a stipend of Rs 2,000 per month who will teach illiterate persons for three months.
Referring to the Cabinet's previous instructions about display of lists of Mustahiqeen-e-Zakat at mosques, the NWFP chief minister directed that the Imam-e-Masjid and the district Zakat officer should ensure that the lists are prominently displayed at mosques.
Earlier, the Cabinet reviewed progress on its previous decisions and directed the Establishment Department to issue a circular to all the departments to ensure that all official correspondence is made in Urdu.
The Cabinet also directed the police department to implement its previous decision regarding ban on music in Public transports, liquor, objectionable posters and vulgarity.
