Federal Water and Power Minister Aftab Ahmed Khan Sherpao has said that the government had allocated about 45 percent of the Public Sector Development Programme (PSDP) in the current financial year for the development of water and power sector.
He said the government was working on restructuring and unbundling of various power utilities to speed up their privatisation process.
He expressed these views, while presiding over a meeting of Pakistan Electric Power Company (Pepco) here on Wednesday. Pepco is a government-owned company for management of power production and distribution in the country.
The minister said that the government was working for the uplift of the masses and this was the reason that different projects have been initiated to bring the less developed areas of the country at par with the developed ones.
Sherpao said that electricity had become a basic necessity of each and every person. He said that the government has devised a methodology to ensure electrification of the 45 percent un-electrified areas of the country by the power companies, even after privatisation.
He also stressed upon the need to set up a system of performance monitoring of the Distribution Companies (DISCOs) even after privatisation, as this would involve provision of better services to the consumers.
The minister also stressed the need of upgradation of planning and professional capabilities of the DISCOs by carrying out capacity building courses and training workshops.
Water and Power Secretary Saeedullah Jan, Privatisation Secretary Saleem Gul Sheikh, Wapda Chairman Tariq Hamid, Planning Additional Secretary Malik Saeed Jan and Pepco CEO Muhammad Amjad attended the meeting.
