Taiwan stocks closed virtually unchanged on Thursday as Wall Street falls weighed on sentiment, while memory chip shares like ProMOS Tech outperformed following recent hikes in chip prices.
The main TAIEX inched up 0.02 percent to end at 6,523.49, taking a breather after a three-day rally that recouped around two-thirds of the 10 percent lost last week following the disputed presidential election.
ProMOS Tech, the market's second most active issue, surged the daily seven percent limit to T$19.50 and larger rival Nanya Tech gained 3.94 percent to T$29.00, helping the electronics sub-index 0.91 percent higher.
But United Microelectronics Corp (UMC), the world's No.2 contract chipmaker, lost one percent to end at T$29.30.
The fall comes after UMC raised its stake in Singapore subsidiary UMCi by 13 percent.
Turnover fell to T$128.19 billion from T$136.0 billion on Wednesday as short-term investors pocketed recent gains even after political uncertainties eased. Among the major losers, China Development Financial Holding dropped 1.56 percent to T$18.90 after going limit-up on Wednesday. Kindom Construction finished 3.46 percent lower at T$12.55.
The over-the-counter TAISDAQ index rose 1.48 percent to 147.67, while April TAIEX index futures edged down 0.14 percent to 6,471.
