The world largest social media platform Facebook is well known of wielding considerable influence, but nobody must have thought that it would declare a country in a state of war.
Well sound weird but it did happen although accidentally when Facebook declared the Philippines is at war in a post celebrating the country’s Independence Day. “Happy Independence Day! Here’s to all of the Philippines’ health, happiness and prosperity,” the Facebook post said while celebrating the 118th Independence Day of the South East Asian country.
This may sound a nice gesture, but the blunder was with the image of the Philippines flag, which was turned upside down. The red part at the top should have been blue and vice versa, and the issue took an embarrassing turn, when users pointed out that Philippines only displays its flag with red at the top when it is in a ‘state of war’.
A website philippinesflag.facts explained, “If Philippines is at war, the national flag will be flown upside down with the red band at the top.”
However, Facebook was quick to apologize, “This was unintentional, and we’re sorry,” said Facebook in a statement sent to the PHILSTAR. “We care deeply about the community in the Philippines and, in an attempt to connect people on Independence Day, we made a mistake.”
