Punjab Chief Minister Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi has said that newspapers play a great role in the age of information and despite the effectiveness of electronic media, there is no substitute for the solid values of the print media.
Speaking at the launching of first tabloid of the country 'The Sun' here on Sunday, the provincial chief executive said that a culture of freedom of media and diversity of opinion is developing in Pakistan.
District Nazim Mian Amir Mehmood, provincial ministers and prominent personalities belonging to different walks of life attended the ceremony among others.
Highlighting importance of freedom of press, the chief minister said, "From my elders I have learned the value of lively and free press and also to get information and direction as to the pulse of the public.
He said the 21st century is full of challenges to meet for which it is pre-requisite that newspaper reading, computer literacy and English language should be promoted.
The Chief Minister appreciated the role of the tabloid seeks to play in encouraging computer literacy and providing fresh incentives to newspaper readers.
Appreciating the launching of 'The Sun' in tabloid form, Pervaiz Elahi said, "It is bold step". The tabloid paper is very reader-friendly, he added.
Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi hoped that 'The Sun' would continue to play its part in responsible, educative and investigative journalism.
Later, talking briefly to newsmen, the Chief Minister said that his government has the honour of getting approved largest number of irrigation projects most of which is in about to be completed.
About provincial government's plan for giving houses to government employees on retirement, Pervaiz Elahi said this scheme has been greatly appreciated by Prime Minister Mir Jamali.
Provincial Minister for Excise and Taxation, Mohammad Shafiq Chaudhry, JI leader Mirul Azim and Chief Editor 'The Sun' Mehmood Sadiq also spoke on the occasion.
