imageISLAMABAD: Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Company Limited (SNGPL) is upgrading its existing transmission system to ensure regular gas pressure in pipelines.

"Following the improved gas supply to domestic and commercial consumers mainly due to import of Liquified Natural Gas (LNG), the existing transmission system needs upgradation," official sources in the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Resources told APP.

Under the upgradation plan, they informed that Rs 8.7 million had been allocated for improving the Rawalpindi transmission system to end low gas pressure the residents facing especially in the winter season.

Commenting on complaints of shortage and low gas pressure in several areas of the city, they said the government was making concerted efforts to rectify them.

"The low gas pressure is mainly caused due to shortage of the commodity particularly during the winter season and the outdated supply lines. The problem will be overcome due to arrival of additional gas in the system and improvement of the transmission system," they said.

One of the main reasons behind the low gas pressure, they said, was the increased number of housing colonies and societies with the passage of time in the city.

SNGPL, they said, was undertaking system augmentation, looping of line, re-drilling of service tee, establishment of emergency teams to resolve low pressure complaints. "Operational teams are working round the clock for this particular activity."

They said there was gas shortage in the country and the required measures were being taken to overcome it, adding that LNG was being imported, and practical work on TAPI (Turkmenistan, Afghanistan, Pakistan and India) and IP (Iran- Pakistan) gas pipelines was going to start soon.
