ATHENS: Greek unions on Thursday said another general strike -- the second in a month -- would be held on December 3 against a planned pensions overhaul.
"The confederation's executive committee has decided to call a 24-hour strike on December 3...because there is an attempted demolition of the social security system," the leading GSEE union said in a statement.
The last general strike over austerity cuts was held on November 12, with over 20,000 people demonstrating in Athens and sporadic violence breaking out between police and hooded youths who vandalised public property.
In July, Greece's leftist government was forced to accept a three-year, 86-billion-euro ($93-billion) EU bailout to keep from crashing out of the eurozone, a rescue that came with strict conditions.
In addition to tax hikes already adopted, Greece has pledged to overhaul its shaky retirement system that is facing imminent collapse.
The labour ministry is working on a new system under which state-guaranteed pensions will be reportedly cut by half -- to a minimum of 384 euros -- and the rest will depend on a person's income and years of social security payments.
