MEXICO CITY: A radio journalist's 12-year-old son was killed in central Mexico when masked gunmen opened fire on his car as they arrived home, a media rights group said Tuesday.
The August 1 attack took place as Indalecio Benitez Mondrago was in his car with his wife and three children near the home, which houses his community radio station, Reporters Without Borders said.
The gunmen were coming out of the house when they ordered the car to stop, but Benitez Mondrago ignored them and they began to shoot, the international organization said in a statement.
"His young son Juan Diego Benitez was hit by three bullets and died on the spot," the statement said, urging the National Human Rights Commission to protect the journalist and his family.
Benitez Mondragon founded the community radio station La Calentana Mexiquense in Luvianos, a town beset by drug cartel violence in Mexico State, near the gang-plagued states of Guerrero and Michoacan.
Camille Soulier, the Americas representative of Reporters Without Borders, called for an investigation by prosecutors specialized in attacks on the press, saying the possibility that the assault was linked to the broadcaster's work should be taken seriously.
Mexico has become one of the world's most dangerous places for journalists, with 78 media workers murdered since 2000, according to the Article 19 media rights group.-Reuters
