LAHORE: With 2,538 fresh cases across the province in the last 24 hours, Punjab has reported a record 82 fatalities in the last 24 hours, taking the death toll from the novel coronavirus to 1,347.

According to government's Covid-19 portal, with the addition of 2,538 new cases, the total number of corona cases across the province has reached 64,216 till the filing of this report on Saturday.

As per data made available to Business Recorder, out of the total of 64,216 positive cases, 19,920 are in the age group ranging from 31 to 45 years, 18,670 from 16 to 30 years, 13,857 from 46 to 60 years, 6,617 from 61 to 75 years, 3,140 from 1 year to 15 years and the remaining 1,117 are above 75 years of age.

Up to 407,083 tests of the coronavirus have so far been conducted across the province with 10,166 conducted during the last 24 hours.

The total number of Covid-19 cases in Lahore has reached 33,090 with 512 deaths so far.

Around 800 coronavirus patients are under treatment in different hospitals in the city, 125 being on ventilators, sources said.

The University of Health Sciences (UHS) and the Water and Sanitation Authority (WASA) of Lahore are going to launch a pilot project to test sewage samples in Lahore for coronavirus.

Samples from 30 areas of Lahore will be collected to test viral load. Tests conducted on the samples can show the extent of virus transmission in the neighborhood as the coronavirus also happens to be present in tears, saliva, urine and feces.

A neighbourhood where viral load in the sewage sample is found to be high will be sealed, and it would not be unsealed until the viral load got reduced by more than 50%.

The vice-chancellor of the University of Health Sciences (UHS), Prof Dr. Akram Javed, said that the rate of tests conducted during the current smart lockdown was low in proportion to the size of the population, and people have also expressed their reservations over sealing of some specific areas during the smart lockdown drive.

He said the UHS in collaboration with WASA was going to conduct a study that would end people's reservations.

Meanwhile, Punjab Governor Chaudhry Muhammad Sarwar told a delegation that coronavirus was out of control in the country, and the main reason was that the people did not take corona seriously, but now the time had come that all sections got united against this virus.

He said that the administration would take strict action against those who were not following the SOPs.
