BAGHDAD: The death toll from a wave of deadly attacks across Iraq on Thursday has risen to at least 82, security and medical officials said on Friday, updating an earlier toll.
The spate of bombings and shootings struck 15 cities nationwide, leaving 270 people wounded in the bloodiest day to hit the country in three weeks, just days before the Eid festival that marks the end of the holy Muslim fasting month of Ramadan.
The deadliest attack took place in the east Baghdad neighbourhood of Zafraniyah, where at least 26 people were killed and 41 wounded by a roadside bomb outside an ice cream parlour, followed by a car bomb, an interior ministry official and a medical official said.
The attacks brought the number of dead nationwide over the course of Ramadan, which began on July 18, to 404, according to an AFP tally. There has been at least one bombing or shooting on every day of the holy month but one.
