Welcoming the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) meeting which took place to discuss the ongoing situation in Indian occupied Kashmir (IoK), Prime Minister Imran Khan said that it was for the first time in 50 years that the world’s highest diplomatic forum has taken up the issue.

The Prime Minister took to his Twitter handle and wrote that there are 11 UNSC resolutions reiterating the Kashmiris' right to self-determination. He further said that this meeting was a reaffirmation of the UNSC's resolutions.

"Therefore addressing the suffering of the Kashmiri people and ensuring resolution of the dispute is the responsibility of this world body," the premier added.

On Friday, the UNSC held a meeting to discuss the recent developments in IoK by India. The meeting was held on China and Pakistan's request. China’s UN Ambassador Zhang Jun summed up the discussions and said, "The UNSC members are concerned about the human rights situation there and also it’s the general view of members that parties concerned should refrain from taking any unilateral action that might further aggravate the tensions, since the situation is already very tense and very dangerous."

Pakistan’s UN Ambassador Maleeha Lodhi spoke after the meeting and termed the meeting as the first and not the last step. "The people may be locked up, their voices may not be heard in their own land, but their voices were heard today at the UN and will always be heard because Pakistan will stand by them and extend full support,” she further said.
