imageBlindness and visual impairment can be considered one of the cruelest forms of conditions afflicted on mankind. Fortunately, there is great news for visually impaired people, probably life changing news.

They would now be able to see the world with their own eyes, all thanks to a smartphone app, which has been developed Dr Andrew Bastawrous an eye surgeon from London.

According to CNN, Bastwrous with his team developed the Portable Eye Examination Kit or (Peek). The app can perform eye test and its possible treatment, without the need of going through any long medical procedure.

There are millions of blind people in the world, and the huge majority of it is found in developing countries. Fortunately, a major chunk of blindness i.e. made up of cataracts and refractive errors is curable.

"The majority is reversible. People who have been blind for decades, with help, can see again," said Bastwrous.

Now, how does it work? In the Peek app test, the letter "E" is shown on a phone's screen with different orientations. The patient need to point in the direction they see the letter facing and the examiner simply swipes in that given direction. The results are shown just after the test.

The app device is able to detect other visual diseases as well i.e signs of nerve disease, macular degeneration etc.
