imageKARACHI: Sindh police has claimed substantial reduction in the crime rates during current year with 1238 criminals arrested and another 195 killed in 5174 encounters.

Additional Inspector General (Operations), Ghulam Azfar Mahesar in a briefing to Inspector General Police - Sindh, Ghulam Hyder Jamali Wednesday said that the department during the current year had mainly focussed on terrorists, target killers and abductors (engaged in kidnapping for ransom and extortion).

Focused attention, he said had helped bringing down the average death toll from nine to five per day.

AIG (Operations) Ghulam Azfar Mahesar acknowledged that police killings continue to pose serious challenge as in the current year 117 police personnel lost their lives in Karachi and another 35 in rest of the province.

"Thirty six of the accused have been arrested and 18 killed", he added.

The senior police officer claimed decline in the incidence rate of street crimes in past two months, with 152 criminals involved in robberies and snatching killed and 1164 arrested in 314 encounters.

In the context of abduction, he said marked reduction was registered in such cases in Karachi and that currently six cases were in process of being solved by the department compared to an average number of 23 cases only a few months ago, that is 300 percent higher.

The IG - Sindh was told that only recently a successful operation was conducted at Kashmore where Mansoor Soomro, kidnapped from Clifton (Karachi) was recovered.

Similarly, he said 40 cases of kidnapping remained unsolved, that is the kidnapee could not be freed only two months ago while presently the number has come down to seven.
