rice-HANOI: Vietnam will ship 300,000 tonnes of 15-percent broken rice to Indonesia by the end of December under the first government contract between the two countries this year, a state-run newspaper said on Friday.

State-run Southern Food Corp, or Vinafood 2, has signed a deal with Indonesia's state procurement body, Bulog, the daily Viet Nam News quoted Truong Thanh Phong, chairman of the Vietnam Food Association (VFA), as saying.

Bulog said earlier this week that Indonesia may import between 500,000-770,000 tonnes this year and that it was considering sellers in India and Vietnam.

The grain will be shipped from the end of this month, in line with the autumn-winter rice crop harvest in the Mekong Delta, the newspaper cited Phong as saying.

Speculation about the deal has pushed Vietnamese rice prices higher in the past week, with 25-percent broken rice quoted at around $425 a tonne on Wednesday, up from $410-$420 a week earlier.

Vietnam has exported more than 6 million tonnes of the grain so far this year, Viet Nam News reported.

The country's rice exports this year could rise 4 percent from last year's record high to 7.5 million tonnes, although revenues may miss last year's earnings, state media has said.

The VFA has raised the floor price for 5-percent broken rice to $460 a tonne from $450, free-on-board at Saigon Port, while the 25-percent broken grade was lifted to $435 a tonne from $425.
