(Karachi) U.S. Special Representative for Afghanistan Reconciliation Zalmay Khalilzad visited General Headquarters in Rawalpindi and met with Chief of Army Staff General Qamar Javed Bajwa, a statement issued by Inter-Services Public Relations stated on Friday.

According to the statement, matters of mutual interest, overall regional security situation, including Afghan reconciliation process were discussed.

During the meeting, COAS Bajwa said that the Armed Forces of Pakistan will continue to make efforts to maintain stability and peace in the region. "The COAS reiterated that our support towards peace process is a manifestation of our goodwill towards the cause."

On the occasion, Khalilzad appreciated the efforts of the armed forces and government for showing interest in the US-Afghanistan reconciliation process. The visiting dignitary appreciated Pakistan's continuous efforts for peace and stability in the region.

Earlier on April 12, Taliban released 20 prisoners of the Afghan government who were handed over to the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in Kandahar. The Afghan government has so far released more than 300 Taliban prisoners.

As per the US-Taliban peace deal signed on February 29, 2020, the Afghan government would release 5,000 Taliban prisoners, while the armed group would free 1,000 Afghan prisoners of the Kabul administration prior to the start of intra-Afghan negotiations.
