(Karachi) President Donald Trump said he hopes Muslim community in the United States will follow the same social distancing standards during Ramazan as Christians at Easter.

The U.S. president made the comments after being asked to defend a retweet of a conservative commentator Paul Sperry, who questioned whether Muslims would be treated with the same severity as Christians who broke social distancing rules.

During a daily coronavirus press briefing, Trump said, "I would say that there could be a difference. And we'll have to see what will happen. Because I've seen a great disparity in this country."

"They go after Christian churches but they don't tend to go after mosques," he said.

So far, more than 700,000 cases of coronavirus have been reported in the United States, forcing religious communities across the country to shutter their doors. America has been the worst hit by COVID-19 as death numbers keep piling up.

At least, 39,000 people have fallen victim to the disease in US while 68,285 people have recovered from the virus. The worst hit is New York with more than 17,000 deaths.
