The Sensitive Price Indicator-based inflation during the week ended March 12 against March 5 witnessed an increase of 0.71 percent for combined income groups. It moved up from 128.74 points to 129.66 points, the SPI data released by the Pakistan Bureau of Statistic (PBS) revealed.

According to the SPI weekly inflation data, Year-on-Year (YoY) basis during (March 14, 2019 to March 12, 2020), it witnessed an increase of 12.40 percent, ie, from 115.36 points to 129.66 points.

According to the PBS data, the weekly inflation for all income groups during the week under review witnessed an increase, as the SPI for the monthly income group up to Rs 17,732, soared up by 0.75 percent, from 132.60 points to 133.60 points on WoW basis, and on YoY basis, it recorded an increase of 11.41 percent from 119.92 points to 133.60 points. For the income group with monthly income of Rs 17,732-22,888, weekly inflation registered an increase of 0.78 percent, from 127.58 points to 128.58 points, while on annual basis, it witnessed an increase of 10.87 percent, from 115.97 points to 128.58 points.

For the monthly income group of Rs 22,889-29,517, the SPI went up by 0.75 percent, from 130.07 points to 131.05 points, while on annual basis, it went up by 14.91 percent from 114.05 points to 131.05 points. Weekly inflation for the income group with monthly income of Rs 29,518-44,175 went up by 0.78 percent, from 127.42 points to 128.41 points, while on annual basis, the SPI for the above income group went up by 14.85 percent, from 111.81 points to 128.41 points.

For the income group of Rs 44,175 or above, weekly inflation registered an increase of 0.66 percent, from 130.74 points to 131.60 points, and on annual basis the SPI for the above income group went up by 12.25 percent, from 117.24 points to 131.60 points.

The increase in SPI inflation is mainly attributed to the escalating prices of following food items and non-food items: chicken 13.83 percent, potatoes 12.72 percent, eggs 8.19 percent, onions 3.27 percent, curd 1.40 percent, wheat flour 1.2 percent, mutton 0.77 percent, milk fresh 0.71 percent, beef 0.35 percent, and among non-food items, long cloth 1.49 percent, and shirting 0.84 percent.

During the week under review, prices of the following items witnessed a decrease: tomatoes 4.32 percent, LPG 2.82 percent, garlic 2.23 percent, pulse masoor 1.15 percent, mustard oil 0.56 percent, gur 0.36 percent, pulse mash 0.28 percent, bananas 0.15 percent, and firewood 0.03 percent.

During the week, out of 51 items, prices of 14 items witnessed an increase, which is 27.45 percent of the basket, prices of nine items, which is 17.64 percent of the basket, witnessed a reduction, and 28 items, which is 54.90 percent of the basket, remained unchanged.

The year-on-year basis prices of the following items witnessed an increase: potatoes 133.82 percent, garlic 100.74 percent, onions 92.55 percent, pulse moong 72.47 percent, pulse mash 48.00 percent, cigarettes 36.81 percent, vegetable ghee (1kg) 35.94 percent, vegetable ghee (2.5kg) 33.07 percent, long cloth 32.89 percent, sugar 31.53 percent, gur 30.58 percent, cooking oil (5kg) 27.17 percent, printed lawn 24.63 percent, petrol 19.98 percent, pulse gram 19.48 percent, shirting 19.33 percent, cooked beef 18.54 percent, LPG 17.67 percent, pulse masoor 17.15 percent, tea prepared 16.68 percent, mustard oil 16.06 percent, and Nido Powdered Milk 15.31 percent. While according to the PBS, a major decrease was observed in the price of tomatoes 72.12 percent, electricity 13.15 percent, and eggs 1.03 percent.
