Pakistan has decided to open major border terminals on the Afghanistan frontier amid presidential elections after receiving a request from its neighbor.

According to a press release by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Pakistan received request from Afghanistan's Ministry of Defence on very short notice for border facilitation and opening of border crossings during Afghan Presidential elections scheduled on September 28.

Pakistan, the press release said has therefore, decided to open the crossing so that Afghan citizen across Pakistan Afghanistan border, are able to exercise their right to vote during presidential election in Afghanistan. "In spite of security issues along border, Pakistan will continue to support its Afghan brothers," the statement said.

On September 26, Pakistan had announced the closure of all passage way and cargo terminals of Pak-Afghan border on September 27 and September 28.

“In view of the upcoming presidential election and in support of domestic transition in Afghanistan, it has been decided to enhance security along Pak-Afghan border,” the FO statement read.
