The Islamabad High Court on Monday reserved its judgement on federation's Intra Court Appeal (ICA) against the provision of bullet-proof vehicle to retired Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry. A division bench of the IHC comprising Justice Noorul Haq N. Qureshi and Justice Aamir Farooq resumed the hearing of the ICA filed against a single-member bench of the court verdict of January 15, 2014 for provision of a bullet-proof vehicle to Justice Chaudhry for an indefinite period.
Appearing before the bench, deputy attorney general Fazalur Rehman Niazi contended that the retired CJP was provided the vehicle for three months only due to security threats.
Niazi pleaded that provision of the vehicle was subject to maintenance and bearing fuel expenses of the vehicle by the former CJP, saying a total of four million rupees has been spent for the purpose from the national kitty so far.
He further said while approval to provide vehicle was granted it was presumed that Chaudhry will take care of himself during the stipulated time but the IHC single bench issued directives to hand him over the bullet-proof vehicle for an unlimited period.
Advocate Sheikh Ahsanuddin, the focal person of the Chaudhry's Pakistan Justice & Democratic Party, appeared before the IHC, saying under the information of Interior Ministry about security threats to his client, the vehicle was provided; however, if the deputy attorney general testifies that no more security threats to Chaudhry were there then vehicle would be returned to the government. After hearing arguments of the both sides, the bench reserved its judgement.
