Amid tight measures, polling for local government by-elections in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa was held on Sunday in a peaceful atmosphere. Elaborate security measures were taken across the 23 districts where polling for was held. Some 50,000 police personnel backed by paramilitary force were deployed at polling stations and polling booths, especially at most sensitive and sensitive areas of the province.
The Election Commission of Pakistan set up 609 polling stations, with nearly 300 declared 'highly sensitive' in Peshawar, as authorities in different cities imposed Section 144 to ban public gatherings.
The competitive polls held between 828 candidates. It is pertinent to mention here that 574 candidates have already returned unopposed.
The polling was started at around 8:00 am, which continued till 5pm without any break. Voters were not allowed to carry mobile phones inside the polling stations.
A total of 609 polling stations were established, including 160 for men, 146 for women, and 303 combined.
