The Sindh High Court (SHC) has issued fresh notice to the Pakistan Swimmers Federation Secretary, asking her to appear in court for flouting its order regarding submission of details of forthcoming domestic and foreign swimming events in court and making nominations thereof.
A division bench had taken up a contempt of court application filed by young swimmer, Areeba Sheikh, who pleaded to the court to proceed against alleged contemnors - PSF president, Major Majid Wasim (Retd), PSF secretary Veena Masud and Pakistan Olympic Association president retired lieutenant general Syed Arif Hasan for allegedly committing contempt of court.
Advocate Faisal Siddiqui, who represented the petitioner, submitted that the young swimmer, who had participated in many national and international competitions and won several accolades, was completely discriminated in selection for the upcoming swimming events by the selecting authorities despite her better performance and higher merit and best past sports record.
He submitted that the court through an order dated August 29 had restrained the alleged contemnors from persecuting or taking any discriminatory action against the petitioner. He added the court directed them to submit details in the court regarding the forthcoming domestic and foreign swimming events where they propose to send swimmers or where Pakistani swimmers have been or may be invited. The court also asked them to provide details of the schedules for the events.
In the application, the counsel stated the authorities concerned deliberately and malafidely did not submit the necessary details and consciously and wilfully subverted the court order. Moreover, he said, the petitioner came to know through the media that Liya Mushtaq has been given swimming award on the recommendation of PSF president and secretary in defiance of the court order.
It was stated that the nomination of Liya Mushtaq was discriminatory and arbitrarily as Ms Liya has won less awards in swimming events than the petitioner. The court noted it was unfortunate that despite notices and repeated opportunities, PSF secretary had failed to show up before court. However, it added, by way of sheer indulgence the hearing is adjourned to January 14. It ruled let fresh notice be issued to PSF secretary for his personal appearance.
