Five people were taken to the hospital Thursday after a suspected arson attack on a basement mosque in the Swedish city of Eskilstuna, police said. Two of the five were treated for smoke inhalation, two suffered cuts and one suffered a foot injury. None of the injuries were severe, police spokesman Lars Franzell told dpa. Witness accounts suggested the fire started after an unknown assailant threw an object through a glass window. Police were investigating the incident as possible arson.
About 15 to 20 people were in the mosque when the fire broke out. The mosque is located in the basement of an apartment building. Several nearby flats were evacuated. Eskilstuna is 90 kilometres west of the capital, Stockholm.
