Head of Chevening Scholarship Pakistan, British High Commission Jonathan Williams has said that Chevening Scholarships are the UK government's global scholarship programme, funded by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) and partner organisations. He said that granting this scholarship to educate the people is the most important example of the interest which UK government takes in spreading education world-wide.
He said that the programme presents awards to outstanding scholars with leadership potential from around the world to study postgraduate courses at universities in the UK.
He stated this while talking to the Lahore Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI) President Ijaz A Mumtaz here on Tuesday. Deputy Head of Chevening Scholarship, British High Commission Shehla Qayyum and Head of Chevening Programme for Pakistan and Chevening Secretariat UK Haresh Lokhun were also present on the occasion.
He said that the scholarships offer financial support for a Master's degree at UK's leading universities, and the opportunity to become part of an influential and highly regarded global network. Jonathan William said that the Chevening Scholarship Programme was established in 1983 and has developed into a prestigious international scheme. He said that Chevening scholars come from more than 150 countries and territories world-wide (excluding the USA and the EU), and this year the scholarships will support more than 1,500 individuals. There are over 43,000 Chevening alumni around the world who together comprise an influential and highly regarded global network. The programme provides full or partial funding for full-time courses at postgraduate level, normally a one-year Master's degree, in any subject and at any UK university, he added.
Speaking on the occasion, LCCI president said that Chevening Scholarship Programme is one of the best methods of care and concern for the people of Pakistan by the UK government. He said that LCCI believes in educating our businessmen on all levels. He said that whether they are industrialists, traders or small shopkeepers, imparting proper education and guidance makes a huge difference in the overall performance of the businesses. LCCI president said Pakistan has brilliant young brains but due to financial constraints, most of them cannot afford to study in leading institutions.
