This is apropos a Business Recorder op-ed “Global vaccine justice – II” carried by the newspaper on Saturday. The writer, Dr Omer Javed, has in fact highlighted gross callousness on the part of International Monetary Fund (IMF) in the midst of Covid-19 pandemic. He has stated, for example, that “That IMF has an important role to play cannot be over-emphasized, but sadly it has seriously fallen short of expectations during the pandemic, even by its own standards in terms of its own response during the Global Financial Crisis.”
Insofar as the IMF-Pakistan relationship is concerned, the lender is not willing to relax some of its stringent conditionalities and that have added to the misery of the common man in Pakistan. It is an organisation that is always eager to win an advantage from borrowers’ difficulties or problems.
