PM directs authorities to carry out relief operation in rain-hit Karachi

(Karachi) Prime Minister Imran Khan has said that the government will not leave people of Karachi alone in wake of the monsoon rains that wreaked havoc in the city. He directed the federal institutions to carry out relief operation in the metroplis, media reported on Wednesday.

The prime minister directed the authorities concerned to step up relief efforts in rain-affected areas of the metropolis and use all available resources to facilitate the people. Imran also lauded the performance of the Pakistan Army and National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) for carrying out relief activities in the city.

On August 25, at least three children died after heavy downpour pounded the metropolis. The monsoon spell crippled normal life as rainwater accumulated on almost all thoroughfares creating hardship for citizens.

In view of the situation, the Sindh government declared rain emergency in the province. Rainfall that continued for hours wreaked havoc in Karachi as the city administration failed to drain out water from the streets.

A 90-year record of monsoon downpour after the city received 345 mm rain at PAF Faisal Base, making it the wettest month since 1931, which was previously recorded up to 298.4 in 1984.
