India wants Kulbhushan Jadhav to be represented by one of its lawyers

  • External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Anurag Srivastava said they are in touch with Pakistan through diplomatic channels regarding the matter.

India said that it wants an Indian lawyer to represent Kulbhushan Jadhav in Pakistan when the court takes up his review petition against his death sentence.

External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Anurag Srivastava said that for a free and fair trial in keeping with the letter and spirit of International Court of Justice (ICJ) judgment, they have asked for Jadhav to be represented by an Indian lawyer.

The spokesperson continued that they are in touch with Pakistan through diplomatic channels regarding the matter, Indian media reported. "However, Pakistan has to first address the core issues- giving copies of relevant documents of the case and providing unimpeded consular access to Jadhav," Srivastava said.

Pakistan again offers India consular access to Kulbhushan Jadhav

In its ruling last year, the ICJ said that Pakistan must undertake an effective review and reconsideration of the conviction and sentence of the Indian spy. The court also said that Pakistan must grant consular access to India without further delay.

However, India is not complying with the court orders. In a press conference, the Pakistan Foreign Office Spokesperson said that Pakistan has been calling upon the Indian Government and urging them to cooperate with the courts in Pakistan.

"Rather than indulging in blame game they should come forward, cooperate with the Pakistani courts so that full effect could be given to the ICJ judgment," the spokesperson said.
