ISLAMABAD: Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) on Friday arrested ring leader of an illegal kidney trade racket along with his accomplices from Murree.

The Agency, recently empowered to investigate cases related to illegal transplants of human organs, had launched a crackdown against the menace and nabbed some accused from different cities.

As per details, FIA raided a hotel in Murree and arrested an alleged ring leader of the racket Saqib Khan and his aides Fazail and Qamar.

The Agency sources said all the accused were involved in illegal organ trade. The accused used to bring kidney patients from abroad to Pakistan for their transplantation here.

The Agency said the accused were hiding in Kalash valley in Chitral to avoid arrest following a crackdown launched against those involved in illegal organ trade.

A few days back, FIA arrested main accused of the illegal organ transplant gang from Sialkot. The arrested person, Abdul Majeed, has been accused of tracing kidney patients in foreign countries and then connecting them to Dr Fawad, another accused.

During interrogation, Majeed revealed names of five more people involved in the crime. They belong to Mirpur, Jhelum and Gujranwala.

Earlier in the month, FIA arrested Dr Fawad, Dr Khalid and Dr Altamash.

The arrests were made during the raid at a private housing society, where the clinic was being run, in Lahore.

Later, FIA arrested two foreigners, who had bought kidneys at the illegal clinic.

After arresting the doctors, the FIA has said the suspects had been involved in the illegal business of human organ transplantation for the last several years and most of their clients were foreigners, particularly from the Middle East.

FIA officials had claimed that the doctors, with the help of middlemen, used to arrange for the provision of kidneys by exploiting the poor and purchasing their kidneys at a low price, and selling them to foreigners for exorbitant dollar amounts.

The gang has already undertaken several illegal kidney transplants in the past by setting up small operation theatres in rented houses in posh localities.

The FIA has expanded the scope of investigations into kidney transplant after busting the gang.
