The Lahore High Court (LHC) on Friday refused to issue stay order against the celebrations of Basant and directed the Punjab government to file reply in a petition against this festival by March 4.
The court passed these orders in a petition filed by a member of the Lahore High Court Bar Association (LHCBA) Muhammad Azhar pleading the court to restrain the government from celebrating Basant festival.
The petitioner contended that Supreme Court of Pakistan had restrained kite flying but respondent government had announced the two days Basant festival. He said that a number of innocent citizens were falling victims of string of kites but the provincial government had allowed the public to celebrate Basant, ignoring the fundamental rights of the people.
He also argued that the government had spent a huge amount on advertisements and for provision of free antennas to the public at large without a lawful authority. He, therefore, requested the court to direct the government to recover the amount spent on advertisements and antennas.
