Taiwan stocks rose 1.77 percent on Wednesday as major electronics shares, such as AU Optronics Corp, rose on the back of overnight gains for US technology counters. Taiwan's benchmark TAIEX share index finished up 112.03 points at 6,455.57 points. Overall turnover rose T$107.057 billion (US$3.4 billion) from the previous session's T$89.5 billion.
In Taiwan, AU's shares rose to their highest level in more than a year and ended 4.16 percent up at T$52.60, while Mediatek's stock surged 6.89 percent to T$349.00.
After the market close, AU, the world's third largest maker of liquid crystal displays, and Mediatek Inc, the largest global designer of DVD chips, reported better-than-expected second quarter results.
The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index jumped 2.49 percent and the Nasdaq hit a 4-year high on Tuesday after a government report showed strong consumer spending in June.
The over-the-counter market's TAISDAQ rose 1.58 percent to 129.54, while August TAIEX index futures rose 1.44 percent to 6,431.
