China has lauded Pakistan's consistent efforts to root out terrorism and promote peace and development at the regional and international levels. Commenting on the agreement signed by Pakistan at Vientiane, Laos, last week with 10 member countries of ASEAN to jointly fight terrorism, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Kong Quan said on Tuesday: "Pakistan's co-operation to the international community combating terrorism is commendable".
The spokesman said China and Pakistan were working closely in the field of counter-terrorism. Both sides, he said had agreed to take effective measures for addressing the issue of terrorism.
Kong Quan told APP that the counter terrorism co-operation was a part of on-going efforts to deepen their all-weather partnership in various fields of common interest. This had also been a source of strength for peace and stability in the region and the world at large, he added.
To a question, he said China believed that the United Nations should play a leading role in the campaign against terrorism. "China also pleads addressing the root-causes of terrorism like poverty, social disparities and bilateral disputes to make the campaign more effective and successful," he added.
Pakistan has formally entered into anti-terrorism co-operation agreement with ASEAN Regional Forum. "The agreement with Asean means we will be having a more co-operative exchange of information and intelligence sharing between Pakistan and the Asean community," said a Pakistani diplomat.
