Taiwan buys 25,000 tonnes of Australian wheat

The Taiwan FlourMills Association has sealed a deal with Australia's AWB Ltd for 25,000 tonnes of hard wheat, said an official at the association on Tuesday. The order, which will include Australian prime hard wheat (APH) and Australian hard wheat (AH), was settled last week and is slated for shipment between July 15 and August 15, said the official.
AWB is Australia's national wheat exporter. Taiwan, which is wholly reliant on imports to meet its milling needs, bought 509,491 tonnes of wheat in the first
four months of this year, up 35.6 percent from the same period in 2004, according to government data.
Almost 90 percent of the wheat were bought from the United States, though
Taiwan makes some smaller purchases from Australia and
India every year, when US prices are considered too high.
