Twenty-two people were killed on Saturday and over three dozen injured when a packed passenger bus skidded off a road and plunged into a gorge in Indian occupied Kashmir, police said.
The accident occurred in Kangan, 40 kilometres north-west of occupied Srinagar, a police spokesman said.
Police and doctors said 22 people were dead as a result of the accident.
A number died at the scene while others died in hospital.
"Some passengers had no chance because of serious head injuries," said a doctor treating the victims at Occupied Srinagar's state-run Shri Maharaja Hari Singh Hospital. Others died of loss of blood, he said.
More than three dozen people remained in hospital with injuries.
Occupation Army and paramilitary personnel helped in rescue efforts, he said.
The accident took place on the road to Baltal, used as a base camp by thousands of Hindu pilgrims seeking to trek to a cave shrine high in the Himalayas. It was not immediately known whether any of the passengers were pilgrims planning to take part in the trek to the Amarnath shrine that some 150,000 Hindus from around the world are expected to visit over the six weeks. Baltal is 90 kilometres, north-west of occupied Srinagar.
