Spot hard red winter wheat basis bids in the Plains production areas and the Texas Gulf were mostly steady on Monday amid thin country selling, grain dealers said.
Cash traders reported light selling by farmers and elevators and continued transportation delays.
Higher protein in western new-crop bushels was helping narrow the protein premium spread. Premiums paid for 13.20 percent through 14 percent protein wheat were down 1 cent a bushel.
Harvesting was sporadic in Kansas, the top US wheat-producing state, slowed in many areas by persistent rainfall. Wheat growers on Monday reported test weights in many areas were being eroded by the wet conditions. Some sprouting was also noted.
Wheat futures prices at the Kansas City Board of Trade have been in retreat, and further losses were expected Monday after Egypt cancelled a wheat tender over the weekend.
However, in news that could help underpin prices, Jordan's government issued a tender for 100,000 tonnes of hard red winter wheat, traders said on Monday.
Futures prices settled mixed on Friday, with the July at $3.66, up 1/2 cent.
