Pakistan Steel Mills (PSM) will set up Institute of Metallurgy and Material Sciences to promote metallurgical and research in the country.
This was decided at a meeting chaired by PSM Chairman Lieutenant General Abdul Qayyum (Retd) here on Tuesday.
Peoples Steel Mills Managing Director Dr Syed Aftab Ahmed and other senior officials were also present on the occasion.
The PSM chairman underlined the need to establish a credible institute of metallurgy and material sciences in Pakistan, which should focus on skill development and applied research to cater to the country's requirements.
He suggested to design the institute in conformity with the rapidly developing requirements of the steel industry.
Dr Aftab suggested to concentrate on applied research and skill development giving due importance to techno-commercial aspects in the areas of productivity, yield and quality.
He said that Peoples Steel Mills was ideally placed to provide on-job training in a variety of different steel processing operations and to extend research-oriented projects.
A committee headed by Dr Aftab was constituted to form a syndicate committee in various disciplines of interest and implement the decisions taken during the meeting.
The committee will prepare its recommendation covering types of courses, syllabi, selection of faculty and upgradation of instructional and training aid infrastructure of Pakistan Steel Metallurgical Training Centre.
