The Punjab University Children Welfare Centre has been registered with the Directorate of Social Welfare Punjab.
The centre was established under the supervision of Punjab University vice-chancellor's wife as a special education school in February 2003 in the PU Residential Colony to fulfil the special needs of special children.
The Punjab University Department of Special Education provides support to the centre.
Started functioning with six children in 2003, the centre has now 47 special students at its strength. Most of its students are children of the university employees.
The centre has categorised its students as educable, trainable, custodial and outreach to provide them education according to their special needs.
It provides education in areas of academic and cognitive skills, hygiene and self-help skills, arts and crafts, household activities, music and entertainment.
The centre has four teachers, including its principal, a doctor, a physiotherapist, a homeopath doctor and a sports coach.
The centre's staff also pays home visits to guide the parents how to take care of their special children.
Education trips, sports events, quiz contests etc are also main feature of the centre. It has won 27 medals in 8th Special Olympics 2004. Two of its students have been selected for international games of special children.
The centre also offers vocational training to girl students while computer skills are imparted to the female residents in the centre.
