Jammu and Kashmir Democratic Freedom Party (DFP) Chairman, Shabbir Ahmad Shah was arrested at Sopore on Tuesday while on his way to Kupwara during the election boycott campaign.
According to Kashmir Media Service, a number of party leaders and activists accompanying Shabbir Shah were also taken into custody. Addressing a public meeting at Sopore before his arrest Shabbir Shah appealed to the people to give honour to the sacrifices of martyrs by staying away from the sham polls.
The puppet state government was using undemocratic tactics to keep the freedom movement's leadership away from the masses, Shabbir Shah said.
