ABN Amro has sponsored a project called K2K, which will involve a quadriplegic covering a distance of approximately 2000 kilometers, non-stop using an automobile from Khyber to Karachi.
The project K2K will be undertaken by Sarmad Tariq, who is a quadriplegic, due to the injury he suffered during a swimming accident in 1991.
He is shoulder down paralysed with partial movements in his arms ie he has control over his biceps but not the triceps, and no movement in the hands.
Despite these conditions he has been driving on Pakistani roads for the last seven years.
This project is his brainchild and the ultimate test of his energy, motivation, and will power.
The objective of this drive is to cover the above-mentioned distance in the shortest time ever by a quadriplegic keeping in mind the traffic hazards and physical limitations.
The sponsorship cheque of Rs 300,000 was handed over to Sarmad Tariq at a ceremony in Islamabad. Speaking at the ceremony, Boe Pahari, Head of Emerging Growth Markets, ABN Amro said, "As a good corporate citizen, ABN Amro would like to contribute back to society and support such causes."
This project highlights that if given access to proper facilities, people with disabilities can achieve things similar to people without disabilities.-PR
