Senate Chairman Mohammedmian Soomro on Monday called upon philanthropists to assist government in carrying out projects for the welfare of the people.
Speaking at the inauguration ceremony of a CNG station set up by Al-Shifa Trust Eye Hospital here, he said that income generation projects "are the need of the hour" for welfare organisations as with these they can help the poor without financial constraints.
He said that NGOs should come forward to raise the living standard of the people and play their role in the socio-economic development of the country.
Soomro recalled his long and close association with Al-Shifa and said that the CNG station would generate resources for the Trust and help it in meeting its capital and current costs.
The CNG station, located along the main ST Road near Soan Bridge, is a joint venture of Al-Shifa and Shell.
General Jahandad said that Al-Shifa is providing quality eye care services to the people. During the last 12 years of its existence, it has provided free treatment to about 2.5 million people around the country.
Most of the financial support for the Trust comes from donations. However, the hospital is endeavouring to move towards self-reliance through various income generation schemes, he added.
Al-Shifa also has a hospital in Sukkur while another one is under construction in Kohat, which will be completed next year. The Trust is also planning to build a hospital in Quetta.
