The Karachi Shipyard and Engineering Works (KSEW) has launched the second tug 'MT Deebal' built for Port Qasim Authority (PQA).
According to a press release issued here on Saturday, the launching ceremony was held at KSEW premises late on Friday night.
The vessel was launched by Rear Admiral Asad Qureshi, Director General (Operations), PQA.
The order for construction of two tugs was placed by PQA to KSEW. The first vessel was launched on December 24, 2003. Both tugs will be handed over to PQA for operations shortly.
The tugs are designed of '40 Tons Bollard Pull' capacity and the overall length of the vessel is 32 metres.
The tugs have maximum speed of 12 knot and are of twin screw conventional kort nozzle tugs outfitted.
The tug is equipped for towing, pushing, offshore supply and can perform other duties.
Rear Admiral Asad Qureshi praised the role of KSEW played for needs of national maritime sector. He said that Karachi Shipyard is capable of delivering all sorts of vessels for port requirements.
He emphasised that others in the maritime sector in the country must also look forward towards KSEW for indigenous construction.
He said he was proud that PQA had decided to place this order of 2 Tugboats instead of getting the same from a foreign shipyard.
He said that efforts put in by the workers of KSEW in carrying out construction work are praiseworthy.
Earlier, the KSEW managing director Rear Admiral Azhar Hussain thanked PQA for reposing confidence in KSEW by placing these orders which is very much in line with pursuance of the goal of sell-reliance and the indigenisation in the field of shipbuilding.
He expressed satisfaction over the increased interest shown by PQA for giving construction and repair orders of marine crafts.
He appreciated the performance of workers, supervisors and officers in completing the construction of these tugs for launching in the shortest possible time and urged to complete the remaining work in the same spirit for earliest possible delivery of both the tugs to PQA.
The ceremony was also attended by officials of PQA, Marine Consultants, Members of Classification Societies and witnessed the launching of "MT Deebal".
