imageKARACHI: Sindh Board of Investment (SBI) has joined hands with local and foreign government institutions and non-governmental organisations to work more effectively for economic empowerment of women in Sindh especially in the rural areas.

For this purpose, a memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed between Sindh Board of Investment (SBI) and Commonwealth Businesswomen Network (CBWN) by providing them business opportunities and access to local, regional and international markets to get better price for their products, Chairperson, SBI, Naheed Memon told APP here.

SBI Chairperson and Executive Officer of CBWN Arif Zaman singed the document at SBI office here couple of days back. Deputy High Commissioner of United Kingdom in Karachi, John Tucknott, Representative of Sindh Rural Support Programme Saeeda Mandviwala, SBI's Director Abrar Ahmed Shaikh and Erum Masood, known educationist Shahnaz Wazir Ali were also present.

Naheed Memon said under this initiative, linkages of women- folk especially in rural areas would be strengthened with government and non-governmental organisations which were working for socio- economic uplift. This would encourage other women to come ahead in economic activities, said SBI's Chairperson Ms. Naheed Memon told the media after the MoU signing ceremony.

She said that against their huge potential, women's contribution in business and development activities was small and that Sindh Government wanted to make them the major player in the national economy in collaboration with local and foreign institutions/agencies, and through the clusters of government and NGOs.

The Commonwealth Businesswomen Network has a comprehensive programme for grooming women's talent and trade activities through their best possible training. Establishment of women excellence centres across the province would be among these supportive measures.

Women would be motivated to e-commerce or other latest modes of trade for getting better prices. Even the rural women were linked to urban section of businesswomen, they would be benefitting a lot, she said.

Naheed Memon said SBI did not want replication but to complement the work already being done by others in public and private sectors.

SBI Chief emphasized on introduction of technology so that women could have better quality of their work and do better trade.

She said we have number of exceptional women in the province and they only need timely and specific support. She noted that the law and order situation in the province had significantly improved.
