imageLAHORE: The newly appointed chief selector, former Pakistan captain, Inzamam ul Haq said that improving Pakistan cricket will take time as he does not have a magic stick to bring improvement overnight.

"Pakistan Cricket Board has reposed confidence on me by appointing me as the chief selector and with my expertise and standing in the game I will try to live up to the expectations," he was addressing a media conference here on Monday at Gadaffi Stadium along with Chairman, Pakistan Cricket Board Shaharyar M Khan who officially announced the appointment of former batting ace as head of the selection committee.

Inzamam said, "if we have to improve our cricket we have to work together, we have to bring the national selection committee, team captain and the coach at one page and t

here is no short cut to bring improvement in short span of time." "We have to be patient, we should not expect anything soon. I will see the players first, inshAllah you will see a change soon. I am here for the national duty and I won't leave it," he said adding, "To select a team is a very important matter which has to be done by cricketers, I will try to fulfill my duty. It is just a new beginning and I don't have a magic wand and there are technical things and allied issues which we have to look in."

Inzamam heads a selection committee which also includes a former opening batsman Wajahatullah Wasti, off spinner Tauseef Ahmed, and Wasim Haider.

The chief selector said his immediate task is to make a pool of players and groom them as a part of teams rebuilding process. "The task assigned to me is challenging but we are quite determined to overcome problems which may come across our way," he said adding "if we are able to have a reservoir of players then we are back on track."

He said the three selectors are experts in their respective field and they will be involved in the first class cricket to pick the talented players and they will be covering the important aspects of the game.

He made it clear that he would not tolerate any pressure in the team selection process and would take decisions purely on merit and keeping in view the performance of the players. "I want to work independently and I hope for that," Inzamam said.

"When I was the captain I used to give my suggestions and I used to have my say. Now, my role is different, I will listen to the captains to know their suggestions and to work collectively for improving teams performance," said Inzamam who was the batting consultant of Pakistan team for a short time in 2012-13.

To a question, he said the performance of Shahid Afridi in the T20 World Cup was not good as every player goes through a bad patch in his career.

"He (Afridi) served Pakistan cricket for twenty years and he was the star player of the team and will remain a star player," he added.
