The Supreme Court on Monday dismissed a petition seeking cancellation of bail of Bollywood super star Salman Khan, who was convicted and sentenced in a hit and run case.
According to Indian media reports, the petition filed by Sushila Himmatrao Patil, mother of Ravinder Patil, a police constable who was Salman Khan's bodyguard at the time when the 2002 accident took place. The apex court bench headed by Chief Justice H.L. Dattu declined the plea by one of the alleged victims associated with the case and belonging to Mumbai Police. The petitioner had challenged the Bombay High Court order granting bail to the actor.
On May 6, Salman was sentenced to five years in jail by a Mumbai sessions court, which found the mega star guilty of culpable homicide not amounting to murder. One person was killed and four other pavement dwellers injured in Bandra in September, 2002. Later then the Bombay High Court stayed execution of the jail term, admitted Salman's appeal challenging the lower court verdict and granted him bail.
Currently, Salman Khan is busy shooting for his upcoming movie ‘Prem Ratan Dhan Payo’ directed by Sooraj Barjatya. The film will also star Sonam Kapoor and Neil Nitin Mukesh in the pivotal role.
