imageASUNCION: Paraguayan Juan Angel Napout was re-elected as president of the South American Football Confederation (CONMEBOL) and was also appointed a vice-president of world governing body FIFA, at elections on Wednesday in Asuncion.

The 56-year-old was unanimously voted in by the 10 member federations and will serve the dual role in mandates set to run for another four years.

He has been at the head of CONMEBOL since August 2014 and follows on from Uruguayan Eugenio Figueredo after the 82-year-old stepped down last year.

Napout, a successful businessman, has been president of Paraguayan club Cerro Porteno, before holding several positions within the Paraguayan Association and finally becoming its president between 2007 and 2014.

He is the second Paraguayan to become CONMEBOL president following Nicolas Leoz from 1986 to 2013.

At the CONMEBOl Congress headquarters in Asuncion, the candidates for the FIFA presidency including incumbent Sepp Blatter were present and campaigning for their respective bids.

While the 78-year-old Blatter remains favourite to retain his post at the May elections, his rivals Luis Figo, the former Portuguese international, Jordanian Prince Ali bin Al Hussein and Dutchman Michael Van Praag, were all in the Paraguayan capital to promote their bids.

UEFA president Michel Platini, who has opted not to run for the FIFA job, was also in attendance.
