Australian legendary skipper and ex-captain Ricky Ponting on Wednesday has advised Michael Clarke to retire from One-Day International (ODI) cricket to help in the smooth evolution of captaincy to Steven Smith.
ICC World Cup 2015 is starting from Saturday with England and Australia facing each other in first ODI.
Clarke's preparations for the mega-event have been in a weak position due to his injury from couple of months, but he scored 64 against the United Arab Emirates (UAE) on Wednesday which shows him in a good position to perform in a mega event of cricket.
According to ESPN, Ponting said, “I believe that it’s the right time for Michael to hand over the One-Day captaincy to Steven after the conclusion of this World Cup.”
"Retiring from one-day games will also allow Michael's body regular rest and recovery periods, something that has effectively taken place numerous times already as he has sat out a lot of ODI series," he added.
Ponting also believes that Clarke has two to three years cricket career left but he has a good moment to hand over the captaincy to Smith.
The right-handed Australian batsman Ricky Ponting also led the team in the 2011 World Cup. He also holds the record for being involved in maximum ODI victories with 262 wins.
